Many of you have heard about blades, in fact, many of you are probably running blades. However for those of you wanting to know more about this new technology, please read on!

What is a BladeCenter Blade Server?

The term Blade Server refers to a thin, ultra dense enclosure that houses microprocessors, memory, disk, networking and other features. Multiple blade servers are inserted into a rack mounted chassis called the BladeCenter.

Normally with a typical server you would find power supplies, ethernet connections, cooling, media optical drives and other ports. The BladeCenter provides this functionality as well as a connection between the blades to achieve redundancy, high reliability and increased density.

Importantly, the IBM BladeCenter offers energy efficient designs and powerful IBM “cool blue” tools to help plan, monitor, control and allocate power consumption and cooling.

Chassis

BladeCenter S

The IBM BladeCenter S is designed for small and medium sized offices with limited IT skills needs. Its target is to be simplistic and economic. It does this by being small enough to fit under a desk and its ability to run by plugging into an average wall power socket. One of the main advantages of this chassis is that it offers disk storage (up to 12 disks) so that no separate external disk storage needs to be purchased.

BladeCenter E

The IBM BladeCenter E is tailored towards space and power constrained data centres. This chassis holds up to 14 blade servers and is 7U high. The BladeCenter E has an extremely dense design and is up to 11% more efficient in power and cooling than its main competition.

BladeCenter H

The H Chassis is IBM’s high performance blade. The 9U rack houses 14 blades and is fully compatible using the same blades and switches with the entire family of BladeCenter systems. It also supports industry standard I/O switches from Cisco, Brocade and others so you are able to have more choice and flexibility for your environment.

It achieves high speed connectivity through 4 x10GB ethernet and rich telecom functionality. It also has the ability to increase bandwidth and throughput for demanding applications such as IPTV, VoD, IMS and security.

BladeCenter T

This model was designed by IBM to meet the rugged needs of the telecom industry. The T chassis is NEBS 3/ETSI compliant and meets standards for electromagnetic compatibility, thermal robustness, fire resistance, earthquake and office vibration resistance and airborne contaminant resistance!

Another feature is optional hot-swappable redundant AC or DC power supplies and cooling and built-in systems management resources in a 20″ deep chassis. The chassis is 8U rack optimised and houses up to 8 Blade Servers.

BladeCenter HT

This is IBM’s Telco version of the BladeCenter HT and is the correct choice for the ultimate combination of high performance and durability in telco, military, medical, government and industrial scenarios. Again this model is available with AC or DC power as well as high speed switching with multi terabit networking, 10Gbps switch fabric.

The BladeCenter HT is the largest in size being 12U, it houses 12 Blade Servers.

Part of this will involve additions to our sales team. Our award winning System i team (last year we won the IBM System i Business Partner of the Year 2005 and this year we took it up a notch by winning Best IBM System i Performance Asia Pacific 2007) will grow from six to seven members.

Our growth in recent years across the rest of the IBM brands resulted in Computer Merchants winning the National IBM Reseller of the Year 2006 for the Systems and Technology Group. Consequently, our System p team will soon grow from four to five members.

At a time when green is more topical than ever I am extremely proud to report that our oldest business (computer brokerage or computer recycling) continues to grow from strength to strength. Our SUN brokerage business continues to break records year on year enabling the SUN team to soon grow from two to three people. We will also extend further into CISCO and HP so that we can deliver a broader range of products to you.

In addition to expanding our sales team, we will continue to invest in our existing staff (through ongoing training) and in enhancing our systems. The entire team at Computer Merchants is dedicated to not only meeting, but exceeding your expectations. Our Mission Statement was developed by our current Managing Director, David McDade who has always believed that our people come first.

With this in mind, it is with much sadness that we are about to see one of our most valued people retire. Yes, David McDade has decided that it’s time to improve his golf handicap and practice his forehand skills at the local tennis club.

A good business does not become a good business by accident

It starts with great people and to that extent we take off our hat to David. David always believed in his people who collectively managed to turn Computer Merchants into a business that continues to go from strength to strength.

Today Computer Merchants is one of IBM’s most successful Business Partners

Computer Merchants began trading used IBM hardware in 1979. David began working as a sales representative for Computer Merchants back in late 1984 when the company was only 5 years old and moved on to Managing Director in 1992.

Back then, we pretty much only dealt in IBM equipment. These days, with David at the helm, our strengths are across all the IBM products ranges (IBM System i, IBM System p, IBM System z, IBM System x, IBM Storage and IBM Software) as well as Sun Microsystems, Cisco, HP, Lenovo and High Availability Solutions.

Computer Merchants became David’s family away from home

He was instrumental in setting up systems and procedures that form the basis of our business today.

One area where David demonstrated his care for our staff was when he moved our achiever’s trip from being a sales target to a Nett profit target. This meant that all staff shared in the success of Computer Merchants.

David’s way of saying thank you is to share a fun time away with everyone’s family at a resort where we can all get together and enjoy ourselves. Last year’s trip included about 60 people all up for a weekend away at Twin Waters resort on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. This is a tradition that is sure to continue.

It’s The People

At Computer Merchants, under David’s guidance, we acknowledge that it’s all the people in the business who contribute to the success of it. WHY? Because to David, he understood that it’s not just a sales representative who managed to make a sale that makes us successful, it’s the combination of every person involved in our business:

• the logistics staff that coordinated the pickup or delivery,
• the warehouse staff who packed & shipped the goods,
• the accounts staff who organize invoicing and
• the production staff who performed the engineering.

It truly is shared success

In addition to our Christmas parties for our customers, David introduced our “Suppliers Christmas Party”. David realized that our suppliers were just as important as our customers and each year we invite everyone from our vendors to our insurance agents and office cleaners, essentially anyone who’s contributed to the success of our organization.

David has always been proud and passionate about Computer Merchants. Today, we still trade with many of the same customers that David began dealing with some twenty something years ago. It’s been quite humbling to hear many past customers, suppliers and staff who have heard of David’s retirement tell us they want to be part of any celebration we have for him.

One senior IBM manager best put it by saying,

“you’d probably fill the whole of the Brisbane Convention Centre when you farewell David”

David, it never mattered how busy you were, you have always taken the time to help each of us grow and develop. You’ve always taken a genuine interest in every single person along the way. You have shown us that we are an important part of the Computer Merchants family.

Of course David wouldn’t have been able to achieve any of his remarkable accomplishments without the ongoing love, support and commitment from his beautiful wife Majella and his two boys Michael and Jonathan. We know Majella is excited at the prospect of having her husband on hand to get that long list of jobs done! The boys will be glad to spend more time with Dad as well.

Kylie

Kylie Mills joined our Customer Service team six and a half years ago as our receptionist. After moving from Reception, Kylie took on the Logistics role before moving up to her current role as Accounts. This means Kylie is a backup to all of our Administration roles.

Kylie is responsible for the accurate reporting of the company’s financials. Her role includes processing payments to our valued suppliers, receipting payments from our customers, processing payroll and processing BAS for the ATO to name only a few. Kylie is here to help should you have any accounts enquiries.

Danielle and Renee

Danielle and Renee are our Logistics team. Renee joined us three and a half years ago and also started as receptionist before taking on the
Logistics role. Danielle started with Computer Merchants as Logistics and has been with us almost two years.

Danielle and Renee arrange everything from entering your purchases and sales into our AS/400 system, organising freight and engineering, and making sure you are well informed each step of the way.

Mina is currently training in Logistics as part of our ‘cross-training’ goal to become a backup to our Logistics team.

Christina and Mina

Our Reception team includes the lovely duo Mina and Christina. Mina has been with the team for over a year now and Christina is our newest edition to the team.

Each time you call Computer Merchants you will be greeted by one of our friendly Customer Service Team members. One of Mina and Christina’s main responsibilities is to ensure your calls are answered and directed to the appropriate person. If you are unsure as to whom you should be speaking to, Mina to Christina can help you with that.

Mina has also been training in Logistics but what you may not know is that Mina has also been helping Kylie in Accounts over the last year.

Christina is currently training in all aspects of the reception role and will be trained in some accounts procedures too. The purpose of this cross training is to make sure your experience with Computer Merchants is straight forward with anyone being able to help you with your enquiry.

Ian and Shane

Our Warehouse team includes Ian and Shane. Ian has been looking after our warehouse and stock for nearly three years. The last six months saw the addition of Shane to the team.

Ian and Shane ensure your equipment is packaged safely and securely, and help Logistics organise freighting and crating if necessary.

Richard

Richard Kennedy has been with us for almost two years now. Richard is our Internal Engineer and is responsible for testing equipment to ensure your purchase is in perfect working condition. Richard’s background was with IBM as a service engineer and with us he has expanded his expertise to include Sun Microsystems, HP and Cisco products.
