CONSOLES! Any of us that has ever had to set up an operations console, or change your System i from Twinax to operations console, would know that sometimes it can be a challenge. Refer to this link for troubleshooting a console.
Recently I was configuring a HMC on a new i525, with HMC 7.3 installed. As part of the installation and configuration process, you are required to update “ALL” passwords.
HMC Logon ADMIN GENERAL HMC
As I am sure most of you are aware, IBM documentation like setup procedures are now online. I downloaded this document, only to find that the SET ASM password procedure didn’t appear to work.
I checked the various CDs that come with the equipment, but still the instructions seemed to be very difficult to make sense of. It seemed that the procedure document was requesting me to click icons and work with menus that didn’t exist.
After spending quite a lot of time second guessing myself, I finally put in a call to IBM for assistance (always the last thing to do). I was advised that HMC 7.3 had not been added to the WEB yet.
The correct document was forwarded to me and off I went. I have been advised this has now been updated. It has taught me to check versions first, rather then spend 4 hours screeching my wheels.
Another quick TIP when working with HMC 7.3:
If you want to perform administration tasks on a managed system, you have to check the box beside the Managed System IP address.
This presents you with a list of menus that are otherwise unseen, therefore unavailable. I know this would seem obvious but it got me almost every time I had to make some changes.
