IBM’s New Licencing On Models 515 And 525
IBM have introduced new i5/OS licensing on the new IBM System i models 515 and 525.
This was done to allow customers to take advantage of the full capability of the operating system on these newer models. It works by simply licensing the number of concurrent-only authenticated users on i5/OS.
Importantly, an i5/OS user is definedĀ as any person that accesses i5/OS and exchanges a type of authentication (User ID/ Password) directly with the operating system or through an application. This is regardless of their location, connection type etc.
A concurrent user is one that is authenticated with i5/OS at any one time.
The entry level IBM 515 machines come base with 5 User licenses and can support a maximum of 40 users, whereas the 525 starts with 30, having the ability to expand to a unlimited license.
In previous cases the IBM 520 may have been too large for some enterprises, whereas the new IBM 515 and 525 range of machines are designed to suit the small to medium business market. The new licensing rules, along with attractive up front costs will make purchasing a new machine a simpler decision for some customers.
