Upgrade From 720 To i525 – Slash Backup TimesSuccess Story
We recently had an email from a very happy customer who had bought a new IBM System i model 525 from us to replace his AS/400 model 720. Here’s an edit of what came through:
Good afternoon Norm and Warwick,
Well you have sold me a dud!!!!!! Now that I’ve got your attention…
Here are just some of the results from the test runs:
The accounts receivable month-end which normally takes 2.5 days to run was completed in just 5 hours. The accounts payable month-end which runs over the same period was completed in 4 hours.
Here’s a comparison of the backup times…
- Old machine
- Normal backup 2.39hrs (7 tapes)
- Full system backup 4.41hrs (11 tapes)
- New machine
- Normal backup 1.09 (1 tape)
- Full system back-up 2.10 (1 tape)
I run a job that reorganises 40 million records once a month. It runs for 13.7 hrs on the 720… well on the new machine it takes 1.49 hrs.
The bigger queries which run over the larger files are processing without delays. I’m very excited and I’m sure all the users will be blown away with the response times. We’re “READY FOR LAUNCH” and its all going to happen this weekend. The machine looks great in the rack and I’ve also moved a few things around to cater for the rack mounted UPS systems.
Once again thanks for your help, looks like we are on a winner. I’ll give you an update in the next few weeks, as we gauge the perceptions from the users.
