Cisco Networking Products are up to date; Is your Network Infrastructure?

November 20, 2014

At the end of June 2014 Cisco was recognised by technology insight and research analyst, Gartner, as a leader in their Magic Quadrant for Wired and Wireless LAN Access Infrastructure. This is the third year in a row that Cisco has been recognised. **

Figure 1.Magic Quadrant for the Wired and Wireless LAN Access InfrastructureDespite the market and customer landscape continuing to shift Cisco’s holding in the Gartner Quadrant of Visionaries and Leaders remains, affirming that Cisco is committed to lead amongst their peers, align their business and their products to meet the needs of the evolving customer environment requirements.

It would be of no surprise, then, to know that within the past two years Cisco has replaced its entire product portfolio within this range of wired and wireless LAN access infrastructure.

  • 3560 series switches have been replaced by the 3650 series which provide the fill convergence between wired and wireless on a single platform.
  • 2960S switches are being replaced with 2960X; offering double the stacking bandwidth (80Gbs) to its predecessor and a capability of 8 switches to be stacked compared to a previous maximum of 4.

You’ll find improvements in feature sets and capabilities in the routers as well.

One of the biggest announcements Cisco made is the end of life of the 6500 core and the announcement of its long awaited replacement; the 6800. It will not be a direct one-for-one replacement allowing you to choose how many slots you would like, instead offering three options to suit where your needs meet.

Catalyst 6807-XL Switch

Designed as a campus or business backbone system, capable of 10/40/100 Gigabit.

  • 7 slot, 10RU form factor. Slot capacity of up to 880Gb per slot
  • Support switching capacity of to 11.4Tbps (full duplex)

Great news for those who may have recently invested still in their 6500 series is the support for Catalyst 6500 series Supervisor Engine 2T and 6700, 6800 & 6900 line cards.

Catalyst 6880-X Switch

Described as suitable for ‘midsize campus’’ it supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet density and full feature consistency with Catalyst 6500 series switches.

  • 5 slot, 5RU form factor.
  • Up to eighty 10/1 Gigabit Ethernet or twenty 40 Gigabit Ethernet ports.Readiness for 100 Gigabit Ethernet.

Catalyst 6800ia Switch

This is a 1RU form factor switch designed to simplify campus or business network operations and management. The unit connects to Catalyst 6500 or 6800 series core switches and enables the entire configuration to work as a single extended switch with a single management domain.

  • 48 10/100/1000 ports, supports PoE+
  • Stackable; up to 3 units of the 6800ia
  • Dual power supplies
  • Requires a Catalyst 6500 or 6800 as the core switch

This announcement of the Cisco Catalyst 6800 Series Core switch is sure to be warmly received by many since its previous, the 6500, has been in manufacture since 1999; a year charts were lead with Ricky “Livin’ La Vida Loca” and Cher was “Believing” – the Cisco 6500 lead the core network for some 15 years…. The Catalyst 6800 series can only be expected to take us from this decade well into the next.
